V-day for masters

There are plenty of brilliant Filipino songwriters in the annals of romantic music. But then there are the likes of Ryan Cayabyab and Ogie Alcasid. They’re the kind of figures other legitimately talented but less recognized and popular would rather have selfies with.

Myself being a member of FILSCAP (Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), I have been witnessed to gatherings of Filipino tunesmiths where some less-established names found themselves starstruck in the presence of icon-colleagues. It’s a testament to what separates the great from the good.

Both Mr. C, newly minted as National Artist, and OA, arguably revered more for his songwriting than his singing prowess, are teaming up for a classy show appropriately dubbed  Master Of Love. It should naturally mean a musical extravaganza boasting a repertoire that will include big hits produced off their sterling careers.

'The Songwriter' Ogie Alcasid teams up with National Artist Ryan Cayabyab in 'Master Of Love' on Feb. 14 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

The concert, by definition an Ogie Alcasid show under the musical direction of Mr. C, is set on the evening of Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14, Thursday, 8:00 p.m.) at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) in Resorts World Manila (RWM). It is one to cover a wide array of pop ballads popularized by the likes of Hajji Alejandro and the late Rico J. Puno.

According to its press release, “couples will get to hear that particular song perfectly describing their love story or one that takes them back to the moment of their first date, first kiss, or the moment they first realized it was true love.”

Ogie has strengthened his industry post by writing enduring hits like “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw,” “Kailangan Kita,” and “Bakit Nagoya Ka Lang.” Mr. C, a mainstream music maestro of the highest level, scored the first Metropop winner with “Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika,” wrote “Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka” which Basil Valdez popularized and the Eraserheads triumphantly revived, and catapulted vocal group Smokey Mountain to public adulation with his compositions.

Master of Love will have as guests the Ryan Cayabyab Singers, as well as lady performers Mariel de Leon, Lara Maigue, and Tanya Manalang.

For lovers of modern kundiman glittered with high-caliber celebrity power, a night to remember awaits.

The night before (Feb. 13), same time, same place, stand-up comedian Jon Santos marks his 30th anniversary doing his thing with the cleverly titled I can DOTHIRTY. Insiders noted that it “promises to be brave, explosive, and loaded with delightfully entertaining hilarious new impressions,” including that of MACDonald Trump and Digong DutertHIRTY-HARI”•obvious wacky digs on two of the current world’s most controversial leaders.

With stage direction by Michael Williams, the show is powered by Jon’s comedic collaborators Eric Nicolas and Marissa Sanchez as the seasoned impersonator mimics familiar personas in the political arena whether has-beens or tainted with unforgivable sins.

Organizers announced that both shows offer special show promotions available to Resorts World Manila members through the RWM Mobile App accessible for free download via the AppStore or GooglePlay.”‹
