Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano will likely hand her post to her brother-in-law movie director Lino Edgardo Cayetano next year.

Based on survey results conducted by Publicus Asia Inc. last month, Lino is the leading candidate for mayor this May 2019 elections in Taguig with 76 percent approval rating over his rivals, Taguig-Pateros Rep. Arnel Cerafica of PDP-Laban party (15 percent) and independent candidate Sonny Andrade (1 percent).

Lino’s running mate, incumbent Vice Mayor Ricardo Cruz Jr., also topped the survey in the vice mayoralty race in the city with 65 percent rating over Cerafica’s running mate Henry Duenas (18 percent) and independent candidate Baltazar Mariateque (4 percent).

“Cruz will eventually beat Duenas of PDP Laban for the VM post,” the Publicus Asia said.

Laarni, who is on her third and final term as mayor of Taguig, filed her certificate of candidacy for congressman under the banner of the Nacionalista Party.

Lino, a known dramatic film and TV series director, is teaming up with Cruz with a campaign slogan ‘Bida Tayo’.

The young Cayetano said he wants to improve on all the programs and projects initiated by his sister-in-law as city mayor, including the city’s free education and scholarship programs.

In July 2017, the city government of Taguig increased the allowances of city scholars which now ranged from P15,000 to P60,000, depending on what type of scholarship the student has availed of.

The city-run Taguig City University (TCU) also continue offering free college education so high school graduates can pursue education up to the tertiary level. TCU students are also full scholars of the city since the local government shoulders all their tuition fees and miscellaneous expenses.

The Cayetano patriarch, the late Renato Luna Cayetano, served as senator from 1998 to 2003.

Taguig is a first-class highly urbanized city located in the south-eastern portion of Metro Manila.

From a thriving fishing community along the shores of Laguna de Bay, it is now an important residential, commercial and industrial center that currently administers Bonifacio Global City, which is considered as one of Metro Manila’s central business districts alongside Makati CBD and Ortigas Center.

Other future developments in Taguig include Arca South (formerly known as Food Terminal Incorporated) Ayala Land’s 70-hectare business and lifestyle district, and Laguna de Bay Lakeshore Development along the Bulacan–Rizal–Manila–Cavite Regional Expressway (C-6 Road).
