After finishing ninth last year, the Altas hope to regain their glory days with Lim at the helm.

“We’re not reaching for the moon, we just want to bring back the competitiveness and the winning culture also,” said Lim, who initially took over as head of the Perpetual Help basketball program last November before securing the head coaching job last January.

Lim, a former PBA pro for Alaska, steered San Beda College to four NCAA championships in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011, which means the Altas are expecting him to carry on his winning touch to the Las Pinas-based school, which has never won a senior cage title since joining the league 34 years ago.

With stints in the Philippine Basketball Association D-League and Fil-Oil tournaments, the Altas, who will be led by 6’10” Nigerian Prince Eze, a holdover from last year’s team, have toughened up for the coming season.

“We’re in a rebuilding process and we have more new players than old ones. So our experience in the PBA D-League and Filoil somehow helped us facilitate the transition while giving the players confidence for the coming NCAA wars,” said Lim. “Our target is next year and two years from now because we have several of my recruits coming in.”

What Lim has is a very young roster that lost practically most of its players, including starters JG Ylagan and Gab Dagangon, who already graduated, and Kieth Llowel Pido, who underwent ankle surgery that will keep him out the whole of the season.

Apart from Eze, the only remaining players from last year were AJ Coronel, Anton Tamayo and Rome Mangalino.

Also making the team are transferees Ton Ton Peralta from Cagayan de Oro, Kim Aurin of St. Francis, Jerome Pasia of PMMS, Carl Soriano, Edgar Charcos of University of the East and Kit Jimenez of Far Eastern University and Luke Sese of San Beda.

Jielo Razon and Jasper Cuevas came straight from Perpetual’s high school team.
