Citation eyed for Filipina entrepreneur

A LAWMAKER has sought a congressional commendation for successful young businesswoman Therese ‘Reese’ Fernandez-Ruiz for being chosen by Forbes Asia magazine among Asia’s top social entrepreneurs under 30 for 2015.

Fernandez-Ruiz’s company, Rags2Riches, booked a “consistent” 100-percent annual growth rate over its first five years in operation and continues to open opportunities for poor women, said Parañaque City Rep. Eric Olivarez.

In filing House Resolution 2180, Olivarez said Forbes Asia magazine listed down over 100 young social entrepreneurs all over the world and reduced them to only 30 after an elimination process conducted by jury members.

He said Fernandez-Ruiz co-founded Rags2Riches as a social enterprise in 2007. Social Enterprises are businesses that are patterned after traditional capitalism models but dedicated to the finding of ways to reduce poverty.

Olivarez, vice chair of the House committee on Metro Manila development, Rags2Riches, through partnering with Filipino artisans across the country, proves that style and sustainability can co-exist by creating eco-ethical fashion and home accessories out of upcycled scrap cloth, organic materials and indigenous fabrics.

Olivarez also said Rags2Riches is creating a stylish social statement in a world where fashion and design are often seen as excess.

He said Fernandez-Ruiz and R2R founders believe in the Filipino tradition of sharing one’s self to the community, country, and the world, to become part of each other’s stories in progress.

“Reese Fernandez-Ruiz is a true gem among the business industry not just because of her success but also for being able to become a great help for the less fortunate individual to community by providing a chance to work and earn a living for their family and themselves,” Olivarez noted.
