In Metro Manila and other parts of the country, floods are not unusual whenever there’s torrential rain. And when there’s flood, unfortunately, the risk of getting leptospirosis increases.

Five tips to avoid diseases during rainy season
Protective clothes such as boots provide protection against waterborne diseases common during floods.

Leptospirosis can be acquired through direct contact with infected animals and urine of rodents. The disease is contracted through cuts and open wounds that are exposed to contaminants such as flood water. If contracted, leptospirosis can lead to a headache, muscle pain, chills, and even organ failure and death.

Here are five simple ways to prevent leptospirosis and other diseases common during the rainy season:

Manage waste properly

Garbage must be kept away properly to prevent contamination. Proper segregation ensures that waste is kept in a safe and efficient manner. It is best to put trash in designated bins and avoid leaving them out in the open to maintain the environment’s cleanliness.

Wear protective clothes

Individuals who commute or are usually outside are the most likely to be exposed to pathogens and viruses, making them susceptible to various diseases. Protective clothes such as boots, jackets, and gloves provide protection against waterborne diseases that are present during floods.

Wash hands frequently

Bacteria and viruses can be found almost anywhere, which means one can easily get infected just by crossing the street, riding a public utility vehicle, or holding onto an infected railing. To lower the risk of acquiring diseases, experts recommend frequent hand washing.

Disinfect all surface

Bacteria and viruses cannot be easily detected, thus disinfection is a must to keep everyone protected. To help with this, New Marketlink Pharmaceutical Corporation introduces Hygiene PRO, a disinfectant with coating technology that can protect nearly any surface for one week up to months. It’s easy and safe to use on people, things, animals, and plants.

Practice proper hygiene

As always, the best way to prevent leptospirosis and other diseases during the rainy season is by observing proper personal hygiene. Hygiene 24, a hand sanitizer with coating technology equivalent to 10 hand washes in just one application, offers an additional layer of protection. It also remains for 24 hours.
