A she in every shea

When The Body Shop founder Dame Anita Roddick first visited Ghana in 1992, she met the women who have treasured shea butter for generations. She personally witnessed how they’ve been using shea butter for its highly moisturizing properties to protect and intensely nourish their skin from the dry Saharan desert winds.

TREASURED BUTTER. For centuries, Ghanaian women have been using shea butter for its highly moisturizing properties to protect and intensely nourish their skin from the dry Saharan desert winds.

After her visit, Roddick decided not only to share this ingredient’s benefits, but to also empower women, their families, and entire communities.

Thus The Body Shop has paid a premium in addition to paying a fair price for shea butter since they started their partnership in 1994. The partnership has helped Tungteiya Women’s Association’s social fund, the Northern Ghana Community Action Fund, invest in community projects like healthcare, sanitation, water, and education that benefit 49,000 people every year.

For the past 25 years, the Tungteiya Women’s Association has grown from 50 members to 540 across 11 villages. Within that period, The Body Shop also co-found the Ghana Shea Alliance, which helps the shea industry strive for a more sustainable world and benefits the 8 million women who are a crucial part of this industry.

This year, the beauty brand announces it is sourcing more shea butter for its extended Shea range, which will boost funding for Tungteiya’s vital community projects by 30 percent.

The extended range includes the intensely nourishing new multi-purpose Shea Butter. Made with Community Trade shea butter from 192 shea nuts, The Body Shop’s new, richly textured Shea Butter can be applied to body, face, hair, and lips or used to create DIY beauty recipes.

The Body Shop also introduces its new hair care trio: the Richly Replenishing Shea Shampoo, Conditioner, and Hair Mask. Inspired by Ghanaian women who have used shea to nourish and protect their dry hair for centuries, these products gently cleanse and leave dry, prone to damage hair feeling richly replenished.

The moisturizing properties and nutty fragrance of shea butter make it an ideal ingredient for body butters, soap, and perfume.

The brand also offers products for head-to-toe skin hydration. Exfoliate with Shea Exfoliating Sugar, cleanse with Shea Shower Cream or Shea Soap, and moisturize with 100 percent vegan Shea Body Lotion or Shea Body Butter.

The Body Shop’s Shea Range is available in all The Body Shop stores.
