A continuing joint initiative by Nestlé Philippines and the Department of Education (DepEd) to promote a lifestyle of wellness among young people reached 6.95 million grade school and high school students in the NCR, CALABARZON, Bicol and Central Visayas regions in 2016 in its fourth year of implementation.

Dubbed Wellness CAMPUS, the program serves to educate public school students on how to live a healthy life, by choosing healthier food and drink options and physical activity. Last year the program was extended to grade school students to inculcate wellness habits at a younger age. Furthermore, the program emphasized nutrition education and encouraged schools to start other initiatives beyond the Wellness CAMPUS curriculum to promote healthy habits among students all year round.

Highlights of the program were the Wellness dance and the Wellness song titled “Health goal mo ay wellness,” set to a catchy beat, both of which scored high among participating students.

The 2016 program covered 10,821 schools in the four regions, representing 47 percent of public grade school students and 49 percent of public high school students in the country.

Wellness CAMPUS modules taught in schools included managing portions; choosing nutritious and varied options (Pinggang Pinoy, Go, Grow and Glow foods); and moving more, sitting less.

Pinggang Pinoy is a concept from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, which is an easy-to-understand food guide that illustrates the right food portions per meal to meet the energy and nutrient needs of Filipinos. Go, Grow and Glow foods are carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetables and fruits, respectively.

A component of Wellness CAMPUS was the best region of the year contest, with Bicol winning first place with a score of 95.8 and a prize of P500,000.00 worth of Wellness CAMPUS benefits.

Best practices of Wellness Campus in 2016 included the setting up of Wellness Learning Hubs inside schools that are accessible to parents; the integration of Wellness CAMPUS modules into school lesson plans; Wellness bulletin boards; the creation of a regional Wellness CAMPUS monitoring team; and the use of the Wellness and Champ Moves dance as a mass activity for DepEd’s major events.

As a program, Wellness CAMPUS is driven by the Nestlé purpose of enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future.
