Pantone for Peace: Colors of 2016

This year’s duo is a breath of fresh air. In previous years, Pantone’s “Color of the Year” was dominated by assertive hues such as marsala, radiant orchid, emerald, tangerine tango and honeysuckle. The year 2016, however, started off with a different vibe by the introduction of Rose Quartz and Serenity. I had such a dynamic year in 2015 that I am ready to slow things down a little. However our previous year went, I am sure most of us welcome the opportunity for some tranquility in our lives, which is exactly what the current pantone colors are offering us.

According to my research, factors such as social issues, politics, pop culture and technology play a role in selecting the upcoming color trend. I do not mean to put a somber tone on such a fun topic but after the unfortunate events of last year, maybe this is a way of promoting peace and a step towards creating a calmer and happier environment. Studies show that pink Rose Quartz is a pacifying color to alleviate animosity and rage, one that promotes composure and empathy while its partner, Serenity, provides a breather in these unsettling, unpredictable times. This subtle but solid pair serves as a remedy to present-day stresses by enhancing wellness and peace.

They just might be great ideas to include in your home, but how do we go about incorporating these colors into our personal spaces? Major renovations may seem like such a huge step in including these colors so maybe we can try applying them in baby steps. If you need more time to commit and embrace these subtle shades, try experimenting with accents first. Here are some ideas on how to play with them for each area:

Experiment with throws or decorative pillows on your sofa. Test out the colors with this fun mandala throw from Quiver. It is made in India with a size of 85 inches in diameter. The designs are made out of 100 percent hand printed, hand dyed cotton. Not feeling it as a throw? It can also double as a mat, table cover or simply as wall décor. It is that flexible.

DINING ROOM

Sprinkle some color to the table through table napkins, coasters, table napkin rings or placemats in these subtle shades. These home décor accessories are temporary and you can display them when you are in the mood.

MASTER BEDROOM

Create a punch of color through decorative pillows that you can place on your bed. If you feel you can utilize the colors further, purchase a set of beddings in Rose Quartz or Serenity or combine them to create more impact. They go well with neutral surroundings.

CHILDREN’S ROOM

For a playful feel, try injecting these pantone colors through accessories or toys. I found some adorable items from Pottly N Tubby, a startup catering to children with an array of handcrafted items for the young and young at heart. This year, they were inspired by the pantone tones for the beanies and teepees collection.

One of the bestsellers is the princess teepee with tulle ruffles. The teepee is designed with three layers of ruffles created out of tulle in a sweet subtle rose quartz hue.

Pottly N Tubby also has two-toned mini beanies that combine both the Serenity and Rose Quartz colors. If you get bored of the color on top, the best part is that you can utilize the bottom design by flipping the mini beanie over. The sample in the photo is made with linen-canvas with designer imported fabrics.

NURSERY

New parents can also have some fun with their babies in style on the baby beanies offered by Pottly N Tubby. These beanie versions come with straps for the baby’s safety but can later be removed to transform them into beanies appropriate for toddlers. Each product is created with premium designer fabrics made of high quality twill or oxford.

For those who are ready to take the plunge with these colors, the tints will make great options for libraries, bedrooms and other spaces one prefers to obtain harmony and balance. They are great whether they are celebrated through soft materials such as fabrics or hard surface materials. Rooms will get an instant makeover with these colors. Whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to have fun while sprucing up your rooms with these tips. Wishing everyone inner peace this year! Namaste.
