Another Speyside whisky enters the sweet flavor-loving Philippine market, offering bottles made with the “purest spring water” in Scotland.
Tamnavulin Distillery (from the Gaelic for “mill on the hill”), located on southern edge of Speyside, in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, brings to the country its Double Cask and Sherry Cask Edition.
Speyside whiskies are said to be the most popular in the world, owing to its sweet, fruity, and floral notes—flavor profile which many Filipinos love.
“We have beautiful appreciation for sweetness; what can be described as light is actually rich, sweet flavor,” said George Schulze, premium brands spokesperson of Whyte & Mackay Asia.
Using water drawn from underground springs in the Easterton hills formed by snowmelt from the surrounding mountains, and naturally filtered through ancient limestone rock, a small group of skilled, dedicated craftsmen creates Tamnavulin’s signature Speyside single malt whiskies matured in casks that bring out their distinct flavors.
“What we are about is producing great quality products. In order to produce something like that you have to have real pride in what you do, approach your every working day with enthusiasm. And my guys truly do that,” enthused Joanne Reavley, distillery manager at Tamnavulin.
Tamnavulin Double Cask is matured in American Oak barrels for that sweet, mellow taste, with a rich, smooth, sherry finish. “Wine integration contributes to the character of the whisky,” explained Stephen Martin, Whyte & Mackay Global single malt whisky specialist.
It features rich, warm aromas of apple and toffee, which Martin described as “perfect partnership,” and honey with sweet marzipan with subtle tangy marmalade notes. Fresh and mellow notes of pear, creamy peaches and pineapple are also present.
“As flavor develops, you may also get coconut as well,” added Martin.
Tamnavulin’s Sherry Cask Edition, meanwhile, showcases what Martin said to be “a wonderful synergy that exists between whisky and sherry.”
It is matured in American White Oak Barrels and enhanced by a finesse in three different types of Oloroso Sherry casks created from a selection of the finest European and American Hogshead.
“The team behind the popular single malt expertly sourced casks from three individual cooperages across Spain. Each cooperage selected for its ability to gift different flavors to this single malt and bring life to the quintessential Sherry notes of raisin, vanilla, and orange.”
Vanilla makes an enticing aromatic entrance, followed by caramel, banana, and milk chocolate with a hint of fresh ginger. Burnt and glazed orange, maple syrup, and raisin flavors are followed by subtle notes of apricot and melon.
Tamnavulin Sherry Edition retails P1,859.75 (and exclusively available at Landers), while Tamnavulin Double Cask is priced at P1,700.
