AYDA 2019: Designing a sustainable future

For this year’s Asia Young Designer Awards, Nippon Paint (Coatings) Inc. calls on bright and creative architecture and interior design students to use their talents to transform future environments by providing practical design solutions.

With the theme “FORWARD: A Sustainable Future,” participants are required to come up with designs that are realistic within the urban context and sustainable for future generations. 

The design competition is open to architecture and interior design students, third year and onwards. Each student is allowed to submit one entry in a CD or flash drive with files in JPEG format at 300dpi resolution. Deadline for submission of entries is on November 22. 

Criteria for judging in the Architecture category is Sustainable Design Concept (20 percent), Design Innovation (15 percent), Color Usage (10 percent), Planning and Functionality (20 percent), Sustainability and Relevance (15 percent), Aesthetic and Visual Impact (10 percent), Theme Compatibility and Forward Thinking (5 percent), and Delivery and Presence (5 percent). 

For the Interior Design category, judging is based on Design Concept (20 percent), Design Innovation (15 percent), Color Usage (15 percent), Planning and Functionality (20 percent), Sustainability and Relevance (15 percent), Theme Compatibility and Forward Thinking (10 percent), and Delivery and Presence (5 percent).

Winners will take home P50,000 cash prize and an internship opportunity at JSLA Architects (for Architecture category) and internship opportunity at AIDEA and Santa Fe Interior Architecture Sdn Bhd (for Interior Design category). 

They will also go abroad and compete against AYDA Gold Awardees from 14 other countries for a chance to be proclaimed “Asia Young Designer of the Year,” which comes with an all-expense-paid, six-week learning experience under the Design Discovery Program of the Harvard University School of Design in the US.

The Nippon Paint Young Designer Awards was first introduced in 2008 to inspire interior design and architecture students to apply their creativity in coming up with practical design solutions.
