After opening its 23rd season last year with a one-night-only gala featuring fast-rising stars of Asian and American dance theater, Ballet Manila this time is set to close its curtains with Deux, a doubleheader that elegantly fuses classical and contemporary ballet.
The closing show, which is also the company’s post-Valentine presentation, will premiere on March 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex in Pasay City. Other performances are set on March 3, 9, and 10.
Deux will feature romantic dreamy ballet “Les Sylphides”—also known as “Chopiniana” in Russia—and Martine Lawrance’s “The Winding Road.”
Featuring the music of Polish composer Frederic Chopin and the lyrical choreography of Russian choreographer Michael Fokine, “Les Sylphides” is a dreamy romantic ballet that depicts a tale between a wood nymph and a young poet.
The title role will be played by Ballet Manila’s principal ballerina Joan Emery Sia, partnered by Elpidio Magat as the poet.
“Winding Road” will feature ballet dances choreographed by Lawrance to the tune of some of the popular tracks of The Beatles namely “She’s Leaving Home” and “Girl.” It aims to combine fast movements and defined showmanship to articulate the powerful image of the iconic rock band.
“She’s Leaving Home” will be headlined by ballerinas Nanami Hasegawa, Pearl Dames, Joan Sia, Shaira Comeros, and ballerino Rudy de Dios.
Meanwhile, an equally stellar lineup awaits “Girl” audiences, led by Hasegawa and Rissa Camaclang; together with ballerinos De Dios, Romeo Peralta, Jamil Montilbon, Sean Pelegrine, Gerardo Francisco, and Mark Sumaylo.
“It has been a very exciting and rewarding 23rd season for Ballet Manila. It kicked off with electrifying productions that formed part of our “Tour de Force” and now we’re poised to close it with Deux,” says Ballet Manila chief executive officer and artistic director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde.
She added, “We thank our audiences for their continued patronage and support and we hope to see you all again when the curtains rise for our 24th season.”
Deux is presented by Ballet Manila and Aliw Theater, with the support of Ticketworld.
