Catbalogan fire guts 61 homes; P8 million in damages

Tacloban City—At least 61 houses were gutted by fire in Catbalogan City, Samar early Wednesday, causing P8 million in estimated damages.

The fire first broke out at the mercantile stall of Joey Sy in Brgy. 6, Pier 1 at 12:30 a.m., affecting 84 families.

The fire reached the third alarm level but was declared out at 2:50 a.m., the Bureau of Fire Protection reported.

No one was hurt or killed by the blaze, the BFP added.

Barangay Captain Nimfa Rosal said some residents described how the houses at the back of the business area smelled strongly of gasoline.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
