There will be no number coding beginning Holy Wednesday, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“This Holy Week, the implementation of the expanded number coding scheme is suspended on the following days: March 27, Holy Wednesday; March 28, Maundy Thursday, and March 29, Good Friday,” the MMDA stated in its advisory.

The number coding scheme is automatically lifted on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, both declared as regular holidays, and on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday.

There is no number coding scheme on Saturdays and Sundays.

The MMDA stated the suspension will give the public the opportunity to travel early to their respective destinations outside the metropolis.

The agency observed that people are going out of Metro Manila during these days to visit and be with relatives and families in the provinces during Lent.

The number coding system was devised to keep vehicles out of major thoroughfares on certain days based on the last digit of their plate numbers.

The system corresponds to 1 and 2 for Monday, 3 and 4 for Tuesday, 5 and 6 for Wednesday, 7 and 8 for Thursday, and 9 and 0 for Friday.

The MMDA resumes the number coding scheme by Monday, April 1.
