Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Sunday directed village executives to sustain the gains from road clearing operations.

“As leaders of our city, it is our responsibility to keep our streets clean and organized,” she said.

“From the mayor down to the barangay, working together is crucial to achieve and sustain this goal. This is not just for 60 days but longer,” the mayor added.

Earlier, Belmonte said the city government was 100 percent done with its clearing operations.

She emphasized the crucial role of barangay officials in keeping roads cleared, especially in problematic areas, where constant monitoring for illegal vendors and other forms of obstruction is needed.

The mayor identified those areas as West Avenue, Timog Avenue, Banawe Road, and Aurora Boulevard.

As part of her objective to hold barangay officials accountable, Belmonte said the city government on Monday shall delegate to them the duty of sustaining the accomplishments from the clearing operations.

According to Belmonte, she is empowered under Section 63(a)(3) of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code to impose a preventive suspension on barangay officials who fail to maintain public order within their jurisdiction.

Village executives have the power to enforce laws and ordinances that are applicable in their areas and to maintain public order.

“We call on local residents to cooperate with the local government in keeping our roads cleared of any obstruction,” Belmonte said.

She urged the public to report through hotline 122 any unusual incident or activity that will derail the product of local government’s effort to clear primary, secondary, and Mabuhay lanes.

The Department of Interior and Local Government will inspect today if local government units have complied with its directive to clear roads of obstruction in 60 days.
