Observe QC ban on firecrackers, Belmonte warns

Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte on Wednesday reminded city residents to observe the total ban on the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices during festivities, and called on them to celebrate New Year’s Eve safely.

No one should be harmed in the celebration of the New Year’s Day, she said, adding safety against any types of firecracker is possible.

“Let’s totally cease using these kinds of harmful devices. The drop of firecracker-related injuries since last year was commendable, but there are still some who still make use of them,” the vice mayor said.

“Let us aim for zero casualties this year. I think it is possible if everyone will be responsible to adhere to our existing ordinance and report those who will sell and use firecrackers,” she added.

Belmonte cited City Ordinance No. SP 2618 imposing a total ban on the use or play of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in all public places of Quezon City during festivity or for any occasion.

The measure has been implemented since October 2017.

“I know firecrackers has been a part of our tradition in celebrating the New Year’s Eve, but let us not compromise our own safety. Let’s get rid of it totally,” she said.
