Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano is running for the city’s second congressional district in the midterm elections next year, while her brother-in-law, film and television director Lino Edgardo Cayetano, is making a political comeback in a bid to replace her.

Laarni, who is on her third consecutive and final term as mayor, filed her certificate of candidacy for congressman on Tuesday under the banner of the Nacionalista Party.

“We are happy to see that there will be continuity in our programs [through Lino],” said Mayor Cayetano.

Lino Edgardo filed his CoC last Monday, accompanied by Lani, his wife—volleyball star Fille Cainglet-Cayetano—and the entire 16-man team of candidates for councilors in the first and second districts.

“It is so inspiring to see you follow your call to service,” Fille said of Lino in a social media post.

The director is teaming up with incumbent Vice Mayor Ricardo “Ading” Cruz with a campaign slogan “Bida Tayo” (We Lead). They are running against the team of incumbent Taguig-Pateros Rep. Arnel Cerafica, who filed his CoC for mayor alongside eight city council candidates last Thursday.

The young Cayetano said he wants to improve all the programs and projects initiated by his sister-in-law as city mayor.

Laarni is the wife of outgoing Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who earlier said he is running for congressman of Taguig-Pateros and seeking a leadership role in the House of Representatives if elected.

Alan Peter, the running mate of eventual President Rodrigo Duterte in the May 2016 presidential elections, bid farewell to all DFA personnel last Monday. He will be replaced by Philippines Ambassador to the United Nations Teodoro “Teddy Boy” Locsin Jr.

The secretary said President Duterte agreed that it would be better if he serves as House Speaker to help the administration achieve its goals.

“We had a heart-to-heart talk, and we both agreed that a role in Congress and a leadership position in Congress would be good in terms of pursuing that vision. With all humility, I will seek another term in my hometown, Taguig-Pateros, the district of Taguig and Pateros, and then let’s see where it goes from there,” he said.

The other Cayetano, incumbent Taguig 2nd district Rep. Pia Cayetano, hopes to return to the Senate via the midterm polls. She and her brother Alan Peter both served the upper chamber during the 14th Congress.

Their father, the late Renato Luna Cayetano, also served as senator from 1998 to 2003.

Taguig is described as a 1st class highly urbanized city located in the south-eastern portion of Metro Manila.

From being a thriving fishing community along the shores of Laguna de Bay, it is now an important residential, commercial and industrial center that currently administers Bonifacio Global City, which is considered as one of Metro Manila’s central business districts alongside Makati CBD and Ortigas Center.

Other future developments in Taguig include Arca South (formerly known as Food Terminal Incorporated) Ayala Land’s 70-hectare business and lifestyle district, and Laguna de Bay Lakeshore Development along the Bulacan–Rizal–Manila–Cavite Regional Expressway (C-6 Road).
