Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan will lead the inauguration of the city’s first-ever sports complex on Friday.
Malapitan will be joined by other elected city officials, department heads, employees, guests, students, and delegates from sister city Dong-Gu in Incheon, South Korea.
The dome sits on a 16,773-sq m lot located in Bagumbong. It is five kilometers northeast of Novaliches and 10 km north of SM Fairview. It has two covered basketball courts with digital scoreboards, bleachers, ticketing office, locker rooms, and movable floorings.
The dome can accommodate about 2,500 seated spectators, officials said.
The complex, aside from the dome, has a semi-Olympic size six-lane swimming pool, 12 gazebos, open basketball and badminton courts, and a jogging path. The sports compound has enough parking spaces for buses, cars, and motorcycles, and provides parking for persons with disabilities.
According to Malapitan, it has long been his dream to come up with a sports complex in Caloocan. “The dream is now a reality. This complex will serve as a training ground for our local athletes and a venue for different sports competitions,” he said.
A Thanksgiving mass will start the stadium’s inauguration, followed by the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
At 10 a.m., a basketball game between the Caloocan Supremos and celebrity basketball players will be held, to be followed by a match between the NLEX Road Warriors and Elite Blackwater of the Philippine Basketball Association.
On Dec. 10 at 6 p.m., a free concert featuring Parokya ni Edgar will be held. Viewers are requested to arrive at the venue as early as 2 p.m.
