Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada placed the city’s emergency units on alert Wednesday morning for deployment to Paco, where a four-storey supermarket building was engulfed by fire.

One firefighter was hurt, while around 30 workers safely evacuated.

The Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau closed down the stretch of Angel Linao Street, from Pedro Gil to Nakpil, as fire fighters battled the blaze that hit Cligan Mart.

The commercial building is located across Paco Market.

“Our MDRRMO [Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office] is closely monitoring it and their rescue teams and support units are ready to deploy in a moment’s notice when the situation worsens,” Estrada said.

The fire started at 5:39 a.m. and reached third alarm by 5:44 a.m. It took four hours, at 10:30 a.m., before firemen have managed to put the blaze under control, according to the command center of MDRRMO at the city hall.

One of the responding fire fighters, FO3 Marlon Podolig, sustained first-degree burns below the nose. The establishment’s stay-in workers, numbering around 30, were safely evacuated.

MDRRMO reports showed the fire started at the second floor stockroom where flammable materials such as liquors were stored.

Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau chief Dennis Alcoreza said traffic enforcers were deployed to the area to assist motorists.

Earlier, Estrada said he will order an extensive inspection of medium- and high-rise buildings in the city, especially the old and dilapidated ones, and determine if they comply with fire safety regulations.

This was prompted by a fire that struck the 12-storey Binondo Terrace condominium in Binondo on September 7 that resulted in the death of a unit owner.
