Quiet rites for Ninoy’s 34th year

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte led the wreath-laying ceremony at the Aquino Monument at the corner of Quezon and Timog Avenues to mark the 34th death anniversary of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.

The ceremony was also attended by officials from the National Historical Commission, officials of Barangays Paligsahan, Project 6, and South Triangle, Quezon City Police District officials led by Chief Superintendent Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar and the officials of the different departments of the Quezon City government.

The Philippine flag is hoisted over a statue of the late senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino statue even as flowers were strewn below the monument located along Quezon Avenue corner Timog Avenue in Quezon City during a wreath-laying ceremony in commeration of his 34th death anniversary. No speeches were delivered to keep the event apolitical.

The monument, a 14-foot structure made of brass and stainless steel sheets, was crafted by artist Eduardo Castrillo. It stands about a block away from the Aquino residence at Times Street.

The spot where the monument is erected was also where civilians stopped an armored personnel carrier from proceeding to the Channel 4 complex during the 1986 People Power Revolution.
