The city government of Makati is suspending its number coding scheme on April 13 (Maundy Thursday) and April 14 (Good Friday) in observance of Lent.

Lawyer Michael Camiña, city chief legal officer and spokesman of Mayor Abigail Binay, said the number coding will remain in effect until Wednesday, April 12, and resume on Monday, April 17.

“Since Monday to Wednesday are still regular work days, we will only lift the number coding scheme for vehicles in Makati this Thursday and Friday,” Camiña said.

Under the number coding scheme, vehicles with plate numbers ending in 1 and 2 are barred from city roads from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and 0 on Fridays. The 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. window is not observed in Makati.

With a daytime population of around four million, Makati has taken a strict policy against suspending number coding on regular work days to avoid aggravating traffic congestion in the city.

Camiña also advised motorists to take note of road closures during the Holy Week, particularly in Barangays Poblacion and Guadalupe Viejo where “kubols” or “kalbaryos” are put up as part of Makati’s Lenten tradition.

Based on the traffic management plan made by the Makati Public Safety Department, effective April 9 until April 16, the stretch of J.P. Rizal Avenue from Makati Avenue to Nicanor Garcia St., will be open to two-way traffic.

On the same period, the entire stretch of Makati Avenue, from Mandaluyong to Makati Central Business District and vice versa, will also be open on both directions. Kalayaan Avenue from east to west will also be open to two-way traffic.

Meanwhile, the following are streets closed due to the installation of “kubols” in Poblacion: Enriquez St. (from Don Pedro to Fermina); Burgos St. (from Makati Ave. to J.P. Rizal); Pagulayan St. (from Burgos to Gabaldon); D.M. Rivera St. (from Gabaldon to A. Mabini); Doña Epifania St. (from Agno to A. Mabini); Ilaya St. (from A. Mabini to J.P. Rizal); Don Pedro St. (from Gabaldon to Mañalac).

Other streets closed until April 16 include Osias St. (from Villena to Don Pedro); Albert St. (from Villena to Palma); Zamora St. (from Gomez to Mabini); San Pablo St. (from J.P. Rizal to San Mateo); P. Gomes St. (from J.P. Rizal to San Mateo); Ma. Aurora St. (from Pertierra to M.L. Quezon); Osmeña St. (from Pertierra to P. Burgos); Molina St. (from Valdez to Quintos); and San Agustin St. (P. Burgos to P. Gomes).

Motorists are advised to expect heavy traffic and take alternate routes. Deputized traffic enforcers will be deployed to direct and manage traffic and assist motorists in affected areas.
