DAVAO CITY”•The “Araw ng mga Empleyado” (Employees Day), which was held at the Rizal Park on Wednesday, became a venue for city government workers here to show off their entrepreneurial skills.

Using their creative and livelihood skills, the city government workers wowed the public with their creations.

“We asked a friend to train us for a few hours on how to make ice cream,” said Eric Antioquia, the administrative officer of the City Transportation and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO).

CTTMO’s ice cream cups, which were sold at P19 each, came in various flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, mango and cheese. Their booth was made more attractive by the large freezer they borrowed for the day.

“We pooled a capital of P7,500 and produced 600 ice cream cups; we were able to [recoup] our capital,” Antioquia said.

They still have to decide what to do with the money they earned from the fair.

Employees of the City Engineer’s Office had to close shop by lunchtime, as patrons wiped out their “dinuguan” and “puto” offering, which they sold for only P50 a bowl.

Not to be outdone, the barangay women’s organizations showcased their different products in coordination with the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO).

“We are selling scented candles. Our citronella product was sold out maybe because it drives away mosquitoes,” said Esperanza Capito, president of the Women’s Association of Barangay 34-D. The scented candles were sold at P100 for a set of three.

Capito said the project is part of Mayor “Inday” Sara Duterte’s “Magnegosyo ta Day!” program, which provides capital to women entrepreneurs in the city.

Capito said they now have 50 members, most of whom have attended the free livelihood training seminars. Among the courses taught to their members were chocolate making, household bleach and disinfectant peoduction, dishwashing liquid and fabric conditioner making.

“I am set to receive P10,000 from Mayor Inday’s Magnegosyo Ta Program, and I will use it as additional capital for the business,” Capito said. The interest-free loan is payable up to two years.

The CTTMO, CEO and CSSDO booths were just three of the 19 booths set up by offices of the city government as part of the Araw ng Davao 2018 celebrations. The other offices opted to set up booths that displayed handicrafts or ready-to-wear and second-hand clothing.

The Araw ng Empleyado also featured a mini-concert, while the Social Security System put up an inquiry booth.
