BOC-Subic nabs P94m cigarettes smuggled as LEDs

The Bureau of Customs-Port of Subic recently seized smuggled cigarettes misdeclared as LED lights with an estimated value of P94 million, after their containers went through X-ray and physical examination.

Martin issued a warrant and seizure and detention (WSD) against the shipment, while the consignee is now subject for further investigation for the possible violation of National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Board Resolution # 079-2005 in relation to Section 1113 of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

In a related development, the Port of Subic also surpassed its assigned revenue target for the month of June, collecting a total of P2.768 billion against its target of P1.913 billion with a positive deviation of 9% or P855,527,541.93.

“In addition to our vigilance on the smuggling of prohibited, regulated and contraband goods, the Port of Subic is in conformity with the rules, regulations and all policies of BOC and policies set by SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority),” Martin said in a statement.

“We reiterate that the Port of Subic and the entire BOC is vigilant as well against smuggling and seizure of banned meat products from 23 countries heavily affected with Swine Fever,” she added.

“Also, the bureau fully embraces the new normal of its day-to-day activities, cascading value transformation best practices in order to uplift the overall character of personnel to resist graft and corruption, transform each BOC personnel into proactive agents in curbing smuggling, strengthen border controls, balanced trade facilitation, and increased lawful revenue collections.”
