After 54 years, graduates of Legarda Elementary School in Sampaloc, Manila recently received their diplomas from their 98-year-old principal, Arturo Coronel.

In 1966, graduation in Manila public schools were suspended because of the government austerity program.

Early last year, the graduating class planned to hold their graduation ceremony to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Ramon Magsaysay High School where most of Legarda’s graduates go to.

Alumni from Australia, Canada and the United States came to attend the long-delayed reunion. Their principal, Coronel, was still sprightly, as he refused to sit down in handing out the diplomas to more than 50 graduates of 1966.
