The provincial government of Batangas launched on Saturday a facility designed to protect, promote, and preserve the Verde Island Passage (VIP) reputed to be the “center of the center of the world’s marine biodiversity”.
The VIP-Marine Biodiversity Center (VIP-MBC) will be established in the Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center, site of the Mother of All Asia – Tower of Peace, considered as the tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in the world.
In his message, Batangas Gov. Hermilando Mandanas said the center aims not only to enhance the eco-tourism push, but also to educate local and foreign tourists of the VIP’s global significance.
“We want to show that we truly give importance to the VIP’s significant contribution to the world’s marine shorefish biodiversity. We recognize that we should be at the forefront of the conservation efforts as stewards of creation,” Mandanas said in Filipino.
He added that the VIP faces threats from unsustainable practices and climate change such that the provincial government proposed the establishment of the center to address these challenges.
The center will feature an exhibition area with interactive display and educational materials, an e-library for digital resource center, and a memory hall and conference rooms to accommodate meetings, workshops, and events.
It will utilize advanced technologies such as LED displays, audio technology, LIDAR sensors, interactive displays, OLED TVs, and projection mapping, among others.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Shahlimar Tamano described the project as a testament of the province’s visionary leadership.
Aside from promoting sustainable tourism, he said the plenary hall dedicated to research and dialogue activities will encourage multi-stakeholder collaboration for the VIP’s conservation.
He underscored the combination of technology with engaging simulation of underwater experience will inspire visitors and drive the VIP’s preservation. Pot Chavez
