Alion is a picturesque upland village with about 5,000 residents.

“For every 200 mosquitoes killed, we exchange that with one kilo of rice,” explained Balan who started the program on Monday together with residents and barangay workers.

“We use plates applied with used oil to capture mosquitoes,” said the barangay captain, disclosing

he has been using this manner to kill the mosquitoes since he was in grade school.

“We have already done search and destroy, and maintain the cleanliness of the surrounding in our village,” Balan added.

The captain said he has mobilized residents against dengue, the mosquito-borne disease that has reached epidemic levels across the country.

“We had one case of dengue here, a child, but the disease was contracted from other barangay,” Balan said. “Prevention is much better. Our heightened drive against dengue is in line with the health initiatives of Gov. Abet Garcia.”
