ORANI, Bataan—The Bataan Peninsula State University-developed mango products have great commercial potential, according to a top university official.
Product development and commercialization is component of the existing BPSU and Commission on Higher Education Discovery-Applied Research and Extension for Trans/Inter-disciplinary Opportunities Research Grant (DARE TO) project entitled “Sustainable Mango Production through Science and Technology Innovations and Support Mechanisms for Capacity Development in Central Luzon.”
“Our mango products have been awarded ‘Promising Products’ by the provincial government of Bataan with DTI Bataan and Bataan Peninsula Tourism Council Foundation,” BPSU Research Development Director and Project Leader Dr. Hermogenes Paguia told mango growers who attended the Farmers’ Field Day and Harvest Festival on Mango held at Joves Farm, Barangay Dona, Orani on Monday.
There are times that the price of mango dives because of abundant yield. Processing mango fruit can be alternative,” he explained.
“But the mango products need to be accredited by FDA and must have DTI registration. The FDA accreditation and trade registration will not be given to BPSU but to an entity, an individual or private owner, who will process the mango products. There is great opportunity for all of you to become entrepreneurs,” he told mango farmers.
The mango products developed under the BPSU CHED DARE TO project are mango tarts, mango polvoron (classic mango and chocolate coated), mango cookies, mango wine, pickled mango, mango marmalade, mango barquiron, mango spread, and mango bar.
“We will showcase our products in the upcoming Manggahan Festival 2018 this May,” Paguia said.
