SAN LUIS, Pampanga—An new district hospital worth P80 million will be constructed here in honor of Pampanga’s late hero Luis Taruc.

The district hospital will be built on a 10-hectare land between the boundary of Mexico and San Luis.

The hospital is funded by provincial government, which has intensified its human development program under Gov. Lilia Pineda.

Under the program, the district hospital will have more competent medical staff like doctors and nurses, and modern equipment aimed to accommodate more patients from the nearby towns.

The old district hospital located in San Luis was supposed to be expanded, but due to lack of space, the new hospital will be constructed at the San Luis-Mexico boundary.

The old district hospital will be converted into a birthing station, a statement of the provincial government said.

Taruc, who hailed from barangay San Monica in San Luis, was declared recently by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as a hero.

The commission recognized Taruc as a freedom fighter with his struggles for the agrarian reform movement that spanned almost 50 years.

The honor was bestowed upon Taruc during his 104th death anniversary, followed by the unveiling of a marker in San Luis by his only son, Romeo Taruc, and Mayor Venancio Macapagal.

Luis Taruc was born on June 21, 1913 in San Monica, San Luis. He was portrayed by Juan D. Nepomuceno of the Center for Kapampangan Studies of the Holy Angel University, as a hero, political leader, and champion of the agrarian reform movement in the country.
