SUBIC, Zambales—Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc. has exchanged the trash collected by students from the coastline of Barangay Cawag here with school supplies during the second tranche of the energy company’s “Protect the Bay Initiative” coastal cleanup on Saturday.

“Over 150 sets of school supplies were distributed as part of the ‘Basura Palit Gamit Eskwela’ program of the initiative,” said RP Energy Corporate Social Responsibility officer Jason Gavina.

The set of school supplies distributed included notebooks, pad paper, crayons, ball pens, and pencil.

“We want village folks especially children, to imbibe the value of environmental care by keeping the surroundings clean and not dumping garbage along the coast,” said Litz Santana, vice president and head of External Affairs of Meralco PowerGen, who joined the cleanup and led the distribution of school supplies to  students.

“This is part of our social responsibility. We believe in supporting our community, and we believe in environmental awareness and preservation,” she said.

Sacks of recyclable, biodegrable, and residual garbages were collected from the coast of Sitio Kinabuksan, Cawag by about 200 students from Kinabuksan Integrated School, and volunteers.

“The recyclable trash we collected will be sold to buy school supplies for distribution again to students,” Gavina said.

The Rotary Club of Quezon City District 3780 and Rotaract Downtown Olongapo also joined the Cawag coastal cleanup on Saturday. “We are glad that Rotary Club of Quezon has joined us in this noble environmental care project,” said Santana.

Earlier, Marife Castillo, Community Environment and Natural Resources officer for Olongapo, lauded the energy company for initiating the program stressing the need for everyone to be environment stewards.

RP Energy, which is developing a state-of-the-art coal-fired power plant at Subic’s Redondo Peninsula, will be using environment-friendly technology for its 600-megawatt power plant.

The energy company is a consortium composed of Meralco PowerGen Corp., Aboitiz Power Corp., and Taiwan Cogeneration Corp.
