BALER, Aurora—The Commission on Elections provincial office here has removed from the voters’ list 179 dead voters to prevent them from “casting” their vote in the 2019 elections.
Ivy Queen Calugtong, election assistant, said the 179 deceased voters were among the 452 voters who were purged from the list of voters in the system of continuing registration being implemented by the poll body’s local office under provincial election supervisor Rommel Rama.
Rama assumed office from acting Pes Panfilo Doctor.
Calugtong said of the 452, 162 registered twice while 80 were found to have transferred to other places. She said their latest records showed a total 129,971 have so far registered as voters.
Calugtong said while they have removed and deactivated from the list 452 voters, they are also adding 848 new voters, including 175 who changed their names and corrected entries, 118 who transferred within the same district, city or town; 172 who came from other places and 253 who are newly registered voters.
A total 126,525 registered for last year’s national and local elections of whom 103,069 actually voted for a voter turnout of 81.46 percent.
Voter turnout was highest in this capital town with 83.82 percent followed by San Luis with 82.96 percent.
Others with voter turnouts were Maria Aurora (82.23 percent), Dingalan (82.62 percent), Dilasag (80.82 percent), Dinalungan (80.61 percent), Casiguran (78.54 percent) and Dipaculao (78.35 percent).
The Comelec earlier said those whose registration was deactivated might apply to reactivate the same until April 29 so they could participate in the coming elections.
Nationwide, around two million voters have their records deactivated.
Under Republic Act 8189, also known as the Voters Registration Act of 1996, failure to vote in two consecutive national elections will result in the deactivation of a voters’ registration.
