Taguig-Makati land row seems far from over

THE Taguig City government on Saturday appealed to Makati City officials to refrain from issuing statements in connection with their territorial dispute.

The Taguig officials, in a statement, said they were informed of recent social media posts claiming that the Taguig-Makati row over Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation areas, already decided with finality by the Supreme Court, was not yet over.

The posts asserted that Makati Mayor Abigail Binay spoke to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo regarding the case.”

“Public officials should refrain from issuing inaccurate statements which serve to validate these false and misleading social media posts and result in erosion of confidence in the justice system of the country,” the statement read.

“Mayor Binay, a member of the bar and an officer of the court, should be the first to categorically disown such harmful rumors instead of fanning the same by issuing careless or imprecise statements,” it added.

Binay, according to Taguig, claimed that Makati received a document setting the case for oral arguments.

“For the record, we have not received any notice from the Court setting the case for oral arguments. Mayor Binay herself admitted in her interview that the Supreme Court has not even acted on Makati’s motion to refer the case to the Supreme Court En Banc. Her claim therefore, that they have received a document setting the case for hearing, is unsettling as it gives the impression that they have insider information on matters which are strictly confidential,” the statement added.

The Taguig officials asserted that Mayor Binay’s statement during her interview was unfortunate. “Not only is it factually inaccurate, but it likewise tends to tarnish the integrity and independence of the judiciary. We ask the Honorable Supreme Court to take notice of these claims from Makati and consider appropriate action.”

Taguig claimed its legal dispute with Makati has come to an end. “However bitter the result may be to the losing party, the final decision must be accepted with good grace. Mayor Binay has conveyed the same sentiment, albeit her behavior speaks otherwise,” the Taguig officials stressed.

The SC had ruled that the disputed 729-hectare Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation where the Bonifacio Global City is located and some other barangays in Makati City are under the legal jurisdiction of Taguig City
