The Philippines’ largest fully integrated telco PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. laud Filipino gymnast Carlos “Caloy” Yulo for winning the gold medal in the men’s vault event and silver medal for the parallel bars final during the 50th International Gymnastics Federation Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.

PLDT and Smart President and CEO, and Philippine Olympic Committee First Vice President Al Panlilio with world champion Carlos Yulo

“Caloy has made us proud beyond words. From 2017, when we took him under our wings, we have witnessed his growth in strength and maturity through his discipline, grit and determination. We are with him all the way as he realizes his dream of making it to the 2024 Paris Olympics,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications President and CEO.

“Caloy reflects what Filipino athletes are about – lumalaban nang buong puso para sa Pilipinas. We hope that his win inspires the Filipino youth, especially those who dream of becoming a world-class athlete,” Panlilio, who also serves as MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF) President and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) First Vice President, added.

The impressive 21-year-old gymnast from Leveriza, Manila bagged the gold in the vault event, besting Japan’s Hidenobu Yonekura and Israel’s Andrey Medvedev. He then proceeded to grab silver in the parallel bars in the same tournament. “I don’t want to go easy, I want to move forward and be the best version of myself,” Yulo said, in an interview posted on the Olympics official Twitter account.

Yulo first won gold in the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, marking the place of the Philippines in the global gymnastics stage.
