The 25-year-old Knott braved the cold weather and  clocked 23.74 seconds yesterday (Thursday in Italy) at the International Meeting City of Savona-Memorial Giulio Ottolia in Savona, Italy.

British favorite Dina Asher-Smith, who finished fifth in the 2016 Rio Olympics, broke the meet record in 23.06 seconds.

Meeting the Olympic qualifying standard time of 22.8 seconds was no longer Asher-Smith’s goal as she has already made the cut back in the 2019 World Championships in Doha with a record-shattering 21.88 seconds performance.

Another British, Beth Dobbin took the silver in 23.06 seconds, while Italian Dalia Kaddari landed third in 23.21 seconds.

Lalova-Collio was close to the record she set last year (23.13 seconds) in taking fourth at 23.71 seconds.

“We just finished. With all things considered, it was acceptable for the circumstances, the weather was cold at 16c and still some effects of jet leg but that’s expected,” said Knott’s coach Rohsaan Griffin.

Knott has been getting into the groove since last month.

Back in April, Knott took the  bronze medal in the women’s 200-meters Olympic Development race at the 2021 Louisiana State University Alumni Gold Athletics meet in Baton Rouge in 23.17 seconds.

Knott’s next tournament is in the Castiglione on May 19.

“Next competition, we will be adjusted and should perform better,” added Griffin.

Asher-Smith will also be in Castiglione. That time, world and Olympic medalist Marie Josée Ta Lou will also grace the meet.

Griffin said Knott is within range of her goals.

“From a statistical standpoint based off of PBS, she placed exactly where she was projected to finish,” said Griffin. Peter Atencio
