In partnership with DZMM TeleRadyo, Eveready recently concluded its series of disaster preparedness seminars at the Bakasyunan Resort in Tanay, Rizal during DZMM’s Red Alert Emergency Expo.

The series of seminars were previously held in Quezon City, Dagupan, and Batangas.

According to Martin Valenzuela, Brand Activation Manager of Eveready Philippines, the culminating event is focused towards institutionalizing emergency preparedness among the general public—a long-standing commitment that the company initiated to help Filipino families equip themselves with the right products during natural and man-made catastrophies.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the Asia Pacific region. Recent reports revealed that the country was among the top ten countries with the most number of people affected by disasters.

It is for this reason that Eveready Philippines and DZMM TeleRadyo embarked on a program to educate the public on the value of disaster preparedness by not only knowing what to do in such an event but also how to equip families and homes with life-saving essentials that help increase the chances of survival.

“Having the right knowledge when it comes to disaster preparedness will go a long way in saving your life, as well as your loved ones’,” Valenzuela said. “It is necessary to have the will to live and knowledge to survive, but this starts with the right preparations.”

He continued, “Eveready is one with DZMM in creating a solid community where everyone is prepared. This is also where we are anchoring all our efforts on—we believe that a community that’s ready to face what comes ahead is a safe community.”

Emergency expert Louie Domingo demonstrated how families can equip themselves during emergencies by showing a bucket filled essential items like afirst-aid kit, canned goods, portable radio, umbrella, lifebuoy, Eveready flashlights and batteries, and other necessities.

According to Valenzuela, Eveready’s wide-range of reliable flashlights have been proven as the best lighting companion by families in the Philippines and around world. Compared with cheap rechargeable flashlights that need to be charged longer than its running time, Eveready’s own roster of flashlights are tried and tested for different tough situations.

On the other hand, Eveready’s affordable batteries complement battery-operated home devices such as wall clocks, remote controls and cordless phones—making it the right choice for families.

“Demand for reliable flashlights and batteries significantly increases during calamities, primarily because of its need. This is good news for us because this means that people are now more aware of the preparations they need to do even before the worst disasters come,” Valenzuela said.

“Why we need to prepare is very simple: kung gusto mong mabuhay, mag-prepare ka,” Domingo said. “It has always been important and it has always been relevant kasi nga buhay ang pinag-uusapan. ‘Paghandaka, hindi mo lang naililigtas ang buhay mo. Naililigtas mo na rin ang buhay ng mga taong nasa paligid mo.”

On top of the disaster preparedness seminar, DZMM TeleRadyo—through its Red Alert Emergency Expo—also discussed hostile environment rescue operations and simple self-defense techniques that attendees can follow. The representatives from the program also conducted fire safety drills, water and flood rescue demonstrations, and open street map training.

For its part, Eveready Philippines conducted a game, which allowed participants the chance to take home Eveready lighting products for free. More than fifty residents participated in the game wherein 14 of them won Eveready products.

“Preparedness is very important in a disaster-prone country like the Philippines. Disaster affects everyone, whether you’re a student or an elderly. The best we can do is to prepare—and the best preparation you can do for yourself is to be informed,” said Ralph Quidlat, a professor who attended the expo.

Valenzuela concluded, “Being prepared is a never-ending responsibility, which is why we will continue to disseminate information on disaster preparedness so that people will always be ready for anything.”
