Mega Sardines: The 1st sardine brand worldwide classified as ‘superfood’

Mega Sardines has always been an innovator. The first to introduce easy-open cans. The first to adopt the 12-hour catching to canning process. And now, the first sardine brand in the Philippines and in the world to be certified as a “superfood” by the Medical Wellness Association.

“My parents were really innovative from the start,” said Marvin Tiu Lim, chief growth and development officer of Mega Sardines. “In fishing, if you don’t innovate, you will lose.”

“Sardines — it is a small fish that packs a big punch. In the same way, we are a Philippine brand that is now the first in the world to get certified as a superfood by MWA. In a small can worth a little over P20, Mega Sardines really packs a lot of nutrients,” he added.

Mega Prime Foods Inc. executives Marvin Tiu Lim, Mark Henry Camacho, Albert Buddahim, William Tiu Lim, and Michelle Tiu Lim-Chan receive the MWA Certificate of Endorsement, officially recognizing Mega Sardines as a certified superfood

The superfood certification could not have come at a most auspicious time – Mega Sardines, founded by Marvin’s father William Tiu Lim, is celebrating its golden anniversary this year.

James Michael Lafferty, founding board member of the MWA, a US-based organization of the world’s largest collection physicians and wellness experts, added: “Mega Sardines stood out in all areas in our System-6 criteria for a ‘Superfood.’ With the product being rich in omega-3, high in vitamins, and processed with world-class safety, we can say it’s more than a pantry essential—it’s a wellness powerhouse.”

MWA’s unique System‑6 Criteria that ultimately led to Mega Sardines being recognized as a Superfood includes the following:

“MWA has never certified seafood before because too much processing is involved and too many additives are added. But based on these proven health benefits, the MWA is proud to bestow its professional recommendation to Mega Sardines—the first and only sardine brand in the Philippines to receive this endorsement. In fact, it is the only seafood brand to do so. This is a proud moment not just for the brand, but for the entire Philippines,” Lafferty said.

“Our 12-hour catching to canning process is what sets us apart,” said Henry Camacho, group manager category marketing head for seafood.

“Mega is the only brand that does this. No other competitor will be able to claim this,” Camacho added.
