AirAsia PH expects increased travel demand despite high fuel surcharges

AirAsia Philippines said over the weekend it is optimistic about sustaining the growth of forward bookings in the coming months despite the adjustments in fuel surcharges.

“We are optimistic that the adjustments in fuel surcharges will not affect the booking behavior of our guests who have been wanting to rediscover the Philippines and key destinations in ASEAN,” AirAsia Philippines spokesperson Steve Dailisan said.

The Civil Aeronautics Board earlier allowed airlines to increase fuel surcharges to Level 7 of the fuel surcharge matrix this month from the Level 4 implemented on May 1 to 30.

Under Level 7, airlines may impose fuel surcharges of P201 to P769 per passenger of domestic flights, and from P1,035 to P9,892 for international flights.

AirAsia Philippines said it recorded an increase in forward bookings for the months of June and July to key destinations such as Caticlan, Kalibo, Puerto Princesa, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu, driven by the return of Filipinos working abroad and the further relaxation of travel protocols.

It said that for the months of June and July, most international visitors booked flights to island destinations such as Caticlan (52 percent), Tacloban (14 percent), Cebu (17 percent), Kalibo (14 percent), Tagbilaran (17 percent) and Puerto Princesa (14 percent).

Top destinations visited by foreign travelers in May were Caticlan (23 percent), Cebu (14 percent), Tagbilaran (10 percent) and Kalibo (8 percent).

“The easing of travel requirements among incoming international travelers will drive growth in domestic tourism. Further, IATF’s recent decision will place Philippine tourism in a competitive spot among its Asean neighbors as we also gear up for a strong recovery in the international market,” Dailisan said.

AirAsia Philippines said it increased its flight frequency this month to augment the increasing demand for both domestic and international travelers. It said that from 219 weekly flights, its services would increase to 255 weekly flights to 16 destinations including Roxas City which will commence on June 16.
