Power producer GNPower Ltd. Co. asked the Department of Energy for a pre-application conference as part of its preparations to venture into the liquefied natural gas industry, sources said Tuesday.

"We are hoping the official submission will push through," sources said, adding that GNPower was planning to put up an LNG terminal and power plants.

The Department of Energy already allowed GNPower to conduct a grid impact study for its proposed 1,200-megawatt GNPower Sisiman LNG combined cycle power plant located within an industrial zone in Barangays Alas-asin and Sisiman, Mariveles, Bataan.

It also approved the grid impact study for GNPower's planned 600-MW GNPower Kauswagan LNG combined cycle power plant  in Barangay Tacub, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

Sources said GNPower's LNG power plants would help ensure offtakers of the planned LNG terminal project.

GNPower’s pioneer project is the GNPower Mariveles Coal Plant Ltd. Co., a 632-MW coal-fired facility which was declared commercially available in 2013.

GNPower also successfully developed GNPower Kauswagan Ltd. Co., a 552-MW coal-fired plant in Kauswagan, Lanao Del Norte, Mindanao.  GNPK offers the lowest price among comparable suppliers as evidenced by its contracts with 21 electric cooperatives.

GNPower also developed GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co., a 1,336-MW supercritical coal-fired power plant in Dinginin, Mariveles, Bataan, which has contracts with 30 distribution utilities and two 2 retail electricity suppliers. The project is now undergoing testing and commissioning.

GNPower is also exploring the development of different renewable energy technologies.
