Customers with an average monthly consumption of 500 kilowatts to 749 kW can start choosing their own suppliers on February 26 , the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines announced over the weekend.
IEMOP said customers under the new threshold can now transact with retail electricity suppliers (RES).
“As of 26 January 2021, 10 suppliers have already submitted initial switch requests to IEMOP for a total of 26 contestable customers under the new lower threshold,” IEMOP said in a statement.
IEMOP, as operator of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), the country’s trading floor of electricity, released an advisory to suppliers regarding the guidelines of the initial switching.
Based on the lower threshold, all qualified end-users can be considered contestable customers under the Phase III threshold level (500kW to 749kW) and will be allowed to switch to the Competitive Retail Electricity Market.
