Meralco waives charges on online transactions

Power retailer Manila Electric Co. waived the convenience fees for online payments during the enhanced community quarantine and general community quarantine period.

“We will extend the waiver of convenience fee for the entire duration of the GCQ, until the GCQ is terminated or moves to the new normal, if you will. We will spare the consumers the cost of the convenience fee. We will need to find a way to reduce this cost to Meralco,” Meralco president Ray Espinosa said during the Senate energy committee hearing on Monday.

Meralco assured it would refund the convenience fee paid by customers when they previously settled their electricity bills. The company initially announced it would only shoulder the convenience fee covering the period from March 16 to May 15.

‘Meralco is looking at a way of having its own platform and not rely on third party. It will be part of capex and be reasonably charged to customers. It can be part of capex, reviewed its reasonableness by the ERC [Energy Regulatory Commission],” Espinosa said.
