Napocor building hybrid solar-diesel power plant

State-owned National Power Corp. held the groundbreaking ceremony for its first solar photovoltaic–diesel hybrid power plant in Limasawa, Southern Leyte.

Napocor awarded the construction contract of the project, costing an estimated P54 million, Power Dimension Inc. The project is expected to be commissioned in early 2019. 

The power plant will have a 120-kilowatt peak solar installation and 120-kWh energy storage system.

“The power plant will use battery energy storage to maximize power generation from sunlight, stabilize supply and ensure continuous power,” said Napocor vice president for power engineering services Rogel Teves.

Napocor said once completed, the project was expected reduce the overall power rates in the island.

Limasawa Island is being powered by Napocor’s Limasawa Diesel Power Plant. The power plant has a dependable capacity of 700 kW, or enough to meet the island’s demand.

Napocor serves 1,200 household-customers in the island through the Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative Inc.
