Internet speed in the Philippines accelerated by more than 80 percent in the past two and a half years while the cost of prepaid mobile Internet in the country is now one of the most affordable in Southeast Asia, according to a telecom executive.

Globe Telecom Inc. presented the data to refute a World Bank report claiming that 2G remains the dominant technology in the country and that the Philippines is on the wrong side of the regional “digital divide.”

As a panelist in the joint public launch of the Philippines Digital Economy Report 2020 entitled “Better Normal under COVID-19: Digitalizing the Philippine Economy Now ”, Globe president and chief executive Ernest Cu echoed the reactions of the representatives from the Department of Information Communication and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, the Anti-Red Tape Authority, and the Union Bank of the Philippines.

“We agree with the recommended key reforms and policy measures that will help the Philippines leverage digitalization for economic and social resilience, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cu said.

Cu said latest data in the August 2020 OpenSignal report showed “a substantial 80.9-percent increase in download speeds and 4G availability, rising 19.5 percentage points from 63.75 percent to 83 percent over a period of 2.5 years.”

The Open Signal report noted that mobile 4G availability in the Philippines has been increasing for at least 10 consecutive quarters, inching closer to the global average of 86.8 percent. Another global internet analytics firm Ookla estimated the average download speed for fixed broadband in the Philippines at 26.08 Mbps as of September 2020.

Meanwhile, Globe said it tapped Apper Digital Inc., a multicloud and digital innovations company to accelerate the adoption of 5G, including cloud gaming. Through its partnership with Apper, Globe was able to test the possibility of enabling gamers to play graphics-heavy games without needing a console or a high powered computing gadget by marrying cloud technology and 5G low latency and ultra-fast speed.

“We believe that it is high time for businesses in the Philippines to implement digital transformation strategies that are powered by the cloud,” Diwa Del Mundo, co-founder and chief principal architect of  Apper said.

Del Mundo said digital transformation strategies are best implemented using cloud platforms, as they provide businesses with flexibility in costs, agility to scale quickly, greater security, and better overall performance.

“Businesses must really pivot to the digital arena, as it is a critical moment due to the current global crisis. Today, digital transactions continue to grow at a rapid pace, as everyone adapts into the new normal. Cloud platforms provide businesses with greater agility, and access to cutting edge technology, which are two aspects required to pivot into the digital realm,” Del Mundo said.

He said the cloud is essential to fast track the adoption of cutting-edge technology, but could be quite cumbersome for many due to its complexity, the required technical skills, and the need for well-equipped manpower.

Engage, Apper’s brand focused on cloud consulting, allows businesses to tap into Apper’s expertise on the cloud to cut the learning curve in their decision-making, which allows them to focus more on their operations, and innovate seamlessly.

Through Engage, businesses may migrate to the cloud without worrying about cloud architecture and implementation. Currently, Apper has the most number of comprehensive cloud certifications in the country at 24 from its partners: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

“Our team of digital natives are ready to support the needs of our partners. We want to help businesses leverage the cloud to ensure business continuity and continuous growth amid the national health crisis,” Del Mundo said.

Apper co-founder and director of marketing, Patrick Zulueta said with Apper’s expertise on the cloud, businesses have the ability to expand without spending too much on capital.

“Our goal is to bridge the knowledge gap for digital innovations. We at Apper provide businesses with various cloud-based solutions to allow businesses to focus on their core operations, while we take care of their cloud and technology requirements,” Zulueta said.

“The digital age is here and now, and it is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Through the cloud, businesses can reach more customers beyond their domain and provide them with services at a faster, much more efficient way,” he said.

Cu said the improvements in Internet speed in the Philippines were partially due to increased capital expenditures and network improvements by telecom companies.

This was reflected in the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking 2020 where the Philippines ranked in the top 10 globally in terms of telco investments.

“On top of this, we are aggressively rolling out fiber to the home in order for the country to catch up in the pervasiveness of home broadband. In fact, as of August 2020, we have already reported 51.4-percent higher fiber rollouts versus the entirety of 2019,” Cu said.

Home broadband access remains a sore point in the country’s connectivity as only 4.18 million households or 18.19 percent of the 23 million households have fixed internet connectivity.

For a long time, the telco industry’s strategy to have pervasive internet in the country has focused heavily on mobile.  With more activities shifting to home as an outcome of the pandemic, this strategy is changing as well.

Mobile internet pricing is also becoming more affordable in the Philippines.  Cu said the cost of prepaid internet access in the country is now one of the most affordable at P11.25 per gigabyte, compared with Thailand’s P190.59, Singapore’s P35.60, Indonesia’s P32.76, and Malaysia’s P4.86.

“We can expect that the country’s cost of the internet as a percent of GNI per capita will be much lower than the global average. This benefits the Philippine market even more, which is about 97-percent prepaid,” said Cu.

“Altogether, access to the internet for Filipinos has never been more affordable and pervasive as it is now.  Consistent with Globe’s perspective, digitalization creates wonderful experiences for Filipinos to have choices, overcome challenges and discover new ways to enjoy life,” Cu said.
