Private sector-led Fisheries and Aquaculture Board of the Philippines called on the government to allow the importation of more roundscad fish (galunggong) to bring down the retail price in the wet markets and supermarkets.

“We recently revived FAB in 2020 in response to the over-regulation of BFAR [Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources] in fish trade,” said FAB chairperson Chingling Tanco.

The group sought government approval to increase the importation limit to 200,000 metric tons of small pelagic fishes, mostly galunggong and extend the importation authority beyond the commercial fishers who were the sole entity allowed to bring in imported fish.

“There were too many import requirements and regulations which were directed towards protecting the local catch of galunggong. Bringing imported galunggong ang selling them in the wet market was the sole domain of 17 fishing boat operators,” Tanco said.
