Vehicle sales jumped by over 130 times in April to 17,843 units from 133 units in the same month in 2020 when trade and economy was halted for nearly a month at the start of the pandemic.

The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. and Truck Manufacturers Association said both passenger car sales and commercial vehicle sales registered significant year-on-year increase in Apri

CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez said the April output posted a record year-on-year sales increase because of the impact of the pandemic last year. The industry anticipated this recovery after auto sales was severely hit by the pandemic in the same month last year—the sharpest decline in the history of Philippine automotive, he said.

Data showed passenger car sales surged 21,323 percent to 5,570 units from 26, while commercial vehicle deliveries increased 11,370 percent to 12,273 units from 107 units in 2020.

Month-on-month sales, however, decreased across all segments by 13.8 percent. Passenger car sales dropped 26 percent from 6,661 units in April while commercial vehicle sales fell 12.6 percent from 14,041 units.

Gutierrez said the dull performance was due to the re-imposition of stricter quarantine restrictions following the increasing COVID-19 cases.

“Additionally, tighter bank lending continues to dampen the demand for consumer spending especially for big-ticket items like auto amid the pandemic. The additional deposit due to safeguard measure is burdensome in itself to consumers and industry alike,” he said.

The industry sold 88,155 vehicles in the first four months, or 36.6 percent higher than 64,675 units sold in the same period last year.

CAMPI and TMA saw this as an indication of recovery amid the pandemic.

Passenger cars showed a 54-percent improvement in sales in the four-month period to 27,425 from 17,812 units a year ago. Commercial vehicles also registered incremental sales of 29.6 percent to 60,730 from 45,863 units.

The top five performers were Toyota Manufacturing Philippines Corp. with 47.35-market share; Mitsubishi Motor Philippines Corp. with 15.84 percent share; Ford Motor Company Philippines Inc. with 7.44 percent; Suzuki Philippines Inc. with 7.25; and Nissan Philippines Inc. with 7.06 percent.
