Finding your drive by going for a higher purpose

With the term coming to an end, I looked back at what was discussed, the lessons learned, and these new tools will equip us to make better decisions in the future.

After completing our service leadership, understanding potential pitfalls in decision making based on immediate cost and integrating learning from other subjects, implementing a social business just became closer.

Open to possibilities

Working with Guanella Home and learning more about PWD’s opened my mind to the possibilities of marginalized people making an impact on society. People with down syndrome were able to put up different businesses, namely restaurants, art gallery, clothing and many others.

The consistent value among them was not letting disabilities crush their dreams. Their creativity, innovation and belief in one’s self propelled them to reach for their dreams. The people and environment near them also played a major part by providing a support system and conditions conducive to challenge status quo. These personalities achieved great heights and defied societies norms not through financial motives but in pursuit of uplifting others.

Search for meaning

I read a book written by Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning. It narrates the trials and realizations he experienced while in a Nazi concentration camp. He wrote that success is an unintentional consequence of dedicating one’s self for the benefit of others, for a higher purpose. It is wrong to place money or fame as the primary goal as it is temporary and does not provide satisfaction.

Businesses integrating multiple stakeholders like Jaipur rugs, where its founding principle and core competency was for the betterment of others, are the hardest ones to beat and are the most fulfilling. The impact of their actions ripple far beyond their financial earnings, empowering communities and opening opportunities for generations to come.

Pursue innovations for others

Personally, I feel my drive is only sustained by pursuing innovations for others, where many would stand to benefit. By empathizing with a network beyond those who may be  able to provide favors for us, we are capable of achieving greater developments.

Our life is but a passing breeze in our vast world, happiness is fleeting but meaning is enduring. Let us focus our greatest skills and efforts for the benefit of others and you will be amazed of what you can do. Don’t think that these thoughts are impossible as the power of the mind is strong. After all, before it was done, it was dreamt of.

What the mind can conceive, the body can achieve.
