The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it is accelerating the delivery of right-of-way for the NLEX Connector Project to ensure the completion of the expressway by the first quarter of next year.

“This new expressway will greatly benefit the public. We will continue our efforts to deliver the right of way needed for the NLEX Connector as we target to complete this in the first quarter of next year,” Roger Mercado, the newly installed acting secretary of the DPWH said.

A public-private partnership project between Metro Pacific Tollways led-NLEX Corp. and the DPWH, the NLEX Connector is an 8-kilometer elevated expressway aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving mobility within Metro Manila.

Participating in the government’s “Build Build Build” program, NLEX has allotted P23 billion for this massive infrastructure investment.

The first 5-kilometer section of the expressway, which is now halfway complete, traverses Caloocan Interchange in C3/5th Avenue to España Boulevard in Sampaloc, Manila.

The next three-kilometer section which spans from España Interchange up to the vicinity of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila will start construction within the year.

Once completed, the NLEX Connector will have four toll plazas and interchanges in C3 and España. It is expected to serve 35,000 motorists daily and provide better access to Manila ports and airports such as NAIA and Clark.

This will also enable faster transport of goods and services between Metro Manila and Luzon provinces.

The operator of North Luzon Expressway and Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway earlier said net profit amounted to P2.7 billion from January to June, up 62 percent from P1.64 billion in the same period last year.

The company said revenues increased 34 percent in the first half to P6.7 billion, as traffic figures continued to trend upward since April 2020, supported by the higher toll implemented in November 2020 and May 2021.

It said the average daily traffic along NLEX as of June 30, reached 246,843 daily vehicle entries, while the average daily traffic along SCTEX reached 54,334. Traffic figures for NLEX and SCTEX in the first six months of the year exceeded the 2020 figures by 40 percent and 29 percent, respectively.
