The Department of Transportation on Wednesday said it is open to the privatization of the operation and maintenance of Light Rail Transit Line 2.
“Those are options that are open. Whether it will materialize, only the future can tell,” Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade told reporters when asked if he would support the privatization of the line which suffered from a power-related shutdown on Oct. 3.
The government suspended the operations of two stations of LRT 2 until mid-2020 and said it would need more than P400 million to repair the damaged sections.
LRT 2 currently runs only from Cubao to Recto. The 13.8-kilometer mass transit line was built at a cost of P31 billion supported by soft loans from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
The government is also constructing the extension of the line to Masinag in Antipolo for P2.27 billion.
