Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. is taking another leave of absence this month to seek the help of foreign experts in his battle against tongue cancer.

The Bangko Sentral Corporate Affairs Office said in a statement Friday the governor would be on leave from Jan. 4 to 21, 2019.

“The governor will be obtaining medical care overseas as part of his continuing treatment program,” it said.

It said Deputy Governors Diwa Guinigundo and Maria Almasara Cyd Tuano Amador would take turns as officer-in-charge of the central bank while Espenilla was away.

“As an organization, the BSP remains focused on its mandate to ensure stable prices and maintain a sound financial system,” it said.

Espenilla in a short text message to reporters expressed optimism he could win the battle against cancer.

“I am really very hopeful that I can finally beat this. Thanks for all the prayers,” Espenilla said.

Early in 2018, Espenilla disclosed he was battling a tongue cancer, saying he was diagnosed in November 2017. He said it was at an early stage “and quite localized.”

He said he underwent surgery soon after to remove the problem. He said he had to go through radiation therapy as advised by doctors.

Espenilla, however, said the radiation therapy on him had unavoidable side effects, such as difficulties in speaking due to dry throat and mouth sores.

In late 2018, Espenilla was noticeably absent from important functions of the Bangko Sentral as he took successive leaves of absence as part of his continuing treatment program.

Espenilla took the helm of Bangko Sentral middle of 2017 when he was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte to succeed Amando Tetangco Jr.

Espenilla has been with the Bangko Sentral for decades. His previous position was  deputy governor for the supervision sector before his appointment.
