State-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. said Friday it suspended the provisional license of Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., the operator and developer of Resorts World Manila, pending an investigation on how a gunman brought in a high-powered firearm on June 2.

Pagcor said in a statement Resorts World Manila should cease and desist all gaming operations while an investigation on its liability regarding the June 2 incident was ongoing.

“In light of the tragic incident that happened in Resorts World Manila last June 2, 2017 – which resulted in 38 fatalities, including the assailant and 54 individuals injured, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. suspends the provisional license granted to Travellers International Hotel Group to operate casinos and other gaming facilities under the business name of RWM,” Pagcor said.

“The said suspension will remain until RWM rectifies its serious security lapses and deficiencies – which caused not only the loss of lives and damaged properties – but also placed the Philippine gaming, tourism and hospitality industries in bad light,” it said.

The gaming regulator said non-compliance with the order would force it to impose other sanctions warranted under existing laws.

Officials from Travellers International and Resorts World Manila did not immediately reply when sought for comment regarding Pagcor’s decision.

Pagcor also asked all integrated resorts to submit security and safety protocols to make sure that the June 2 incident would not happen again.

“As the country’s gaming regulator, Pagcor will continue to safeguard the interest not only of all gaming industry players but also, of all guests, tourists and other stakeholders involved,” Pagcor said.

Share price of RWM on Friday closed at P3.05 per share, up 3.4 percent from the previous day’s close.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday started an investigation on the deadly attack at RWM.

A lone gunman, identified as Jessie Carlos, managed to enter the integrated resort and casino facility in Pasay on June 2, setting gaming tables on fire which resulted in the death of 37 people, including guests and employees.

Resorts World Manila is a 11.5-hectare development that opened in 2009. It was the first Pagcor licensee to operate an integrated resort and casino in the country.

Resorts World Manila recently completed phase two of its development which included the expansion of existing Marriott Hotel Manila through Marriott Grand Ballroom and the Marriott West Wing.

Construction of phase 3, which includes three luxury hotels – Sheraton Manila Hotel, Hilton Manila and Maxims II”•is ongoing.
