Senator proposes online car registration

A senator has filed a resolution urging the Transportation Department to implement online motor vehicle registration in a bid to eliminate corruption and speed up the process at the Land Transportation Office.

Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito, who filed Senate Resolution No. 329 on May 29, said the establishment and implementation of online registration for motor vehicles would promote transparency in LTO.

The online car registration will also simplify the procedure, thereby reducing red tape and expedite transactions with the agency, he said.

“There have been allegations that LTO employees receive bribes during the vehicle inspection stage of registration and conduct bogus emission testing and engine number stencils,” he said.

Based on the guidelines in the implementation of revised LTO Citizen’s Charter, the time that should be spent by an applicant for the renewal of motor vehicle is only 60 minutes.  However, the public spend an average of two to four days to register a motor vehicle due to inefficiency and inadequacy of LTO employees and facilities.
