ICTSI gets nod for RoRo terminal

Port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc. said Thursday  it secured a green light from the government to build a common-user barge and roll-on roll-off terminal in Cavite province.

“The government has approved it but it was not an unsolicited proposal. It is a private development for a common user facility,” ICTSI senior vice president for Asia-Pacific region and Manila International Container Terminal head Christian Gonzales said.

“We will be cutting the ribbon [on Friday] as a project launch with construction start pending ECC [environmental compliance certificate,” he said.

The $30-million Cavite Gateway Terminal will be constructed in a six-hectare property in Tanza, Cavite.

“We are  going to develop it in phases. First phase will be very basic,” Gonzalez said.

Phase 1 of the project is designed to support a total output of 115,000 twenty-foot equivalent units a year, or equal to about 140,000 fewer truck trips plying city roads annually.

Gonzalez said he expected the terminal to be operational by the first quarter of 2018.

Harbor Star, the barge operator for the CGT, will deploy 150 TEU barges.

“Harbor Star is going to be a client. We are doing it on our own. It’s a common user facility. Whoever wants to use it, if you can secure window, then, go and use it,” he said.

ICTSI earlier reported a net income of $180 million in 2016, up 207 percent year-on-year.

The port operator led by businessman Enrique Razon said total revenues increased 7 percent last year to $1.13 billion from $1.05 billion in 2015.
