Manila Water turns to new sources

Manila Water Company is intensifying its water security measures for 7.8 million customers in the East Zone by tapping new raw water sources to ensure reliable supply through the summer and into 2027.

The company said it is reducing its reliance on the Angat Dam through multi-billion-peso investments in alternative infrastructure. Central to this strategy is the exclusive use of the Upper Wawa Dam and Tayabasan Weir, operated under WawaJVCo.

These facilities are capable of delivering up to 710 million liters per day (MLD) at maximum capacity, providing a critical buffer during peak demand and dry weather conditions such as El Niño.

The upstream supply is supported by the Wawa–Calawis Water Supply System, which draws surface water from the Upper Marikina River basin. The system includes the P8.2 billion Calawis Water Treatment Plant, an 80-MLD facility currently serving Antipolo City and surrounding municipalities.

Manila Water also expanded its reach into Laguna Lake via the Cardona Water Treatment Plant. Following capacity maximization and phased upgrades, the plant now delivers 100 MLD of treated water to about 800,000 residents in Rizal. The facility helps alleviate pressure on the central distribution network.
